Reporting Streetlight Problems

Did you know that the City of Olympia manages over 3,800 street lights? Here are some important, interesting facts about the complexity of keeping our sidewalks illuminated.

Changing a Bulb Seems Easy:

Why does it take so long or seem so complicated to change out a bulb, you ask? Here are some things to know:

  • Special Equipment Needed: When a light goes out it is not as simple as changing a light bulb in your home. Imagine having 16-foot ceilings and having to get scaffolding every time a light goes out. That is what it is like for transportation crews. They take out a special "bucket" truck and then sometimes have to cone off part of the street to change a light bulb. Now factor that in with 3,800 lights.
  • Maintenance normally needed: Unfortunately, it is not usually just a burned out light bulb. Over 80% of the time, the light needs parts or some type of maintenance.
  • Life of the bulb: Olympia has over 3,800 street lights with bulbs lasting only 4-5 years. That's 1,000 bulbs to change a year.

Reporting a Street Light Out:

First, check to see if it is a wooden or metal pole.

  • Wooden pole: Contact Puget Sound Energy at 877.229.1235
  • Metal pole within the Olympia City Limits: Contact the Public Works Department at 360. 753.8588 or publicworks@ci.olympia.wa.us. If emailing, please provide the following:
  • Address and the nearest cross street
  • Your contact name and number - in case we have questions

Please be aware that sometimes it takes several weeks before a bulb gets replaced. Why?

  • All City of Olympia street lights reported out are placed on a list.
  • Staff works to replace all the bulbs out in that area. This saves time and resouces.
  • Many times it is not just a bulb but maintenance that is needed. Then parts must be ordered and maintenance scheduled.
