Cross Connection - Don't Drink Irrigation Backwash
Irrigation systems have the largest risk of cross connection. Be sure you're not drinking backwash from your irrigation system. Learn what is required.
You must install a backflow prevention device:
Two of the four devices available are described below. Both devices are sold in your local home improvement store. Other devices are available from a professional installer.
You need a permit:
All irrigation systems supplied by public water systems require a plumbing permit before installation.
Select the right device:
Be sure to select the device that is right for your situation. Not sure? Call us, we can help.
Hiring a professional:
When hiring a professional ensure that they are certified. Visit your yellow pages for local plumbers.
Doing repairs or moving lines?
When the work is done, call Steve Coke at Public Works for an inspection.
After installation:
After your system is installed, call us. We will ensure your system is safe for both you and the community.
Annual inspections required:
To ensure your system stays safe, you must have it inspected annually. Visit www.wacertservices.org for a list of state-certified testers.
Picking the Right Device is Important:
Device #1
Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA): No fertilizer and other agricultural chemicals may be introduced into an irrigation system equipped with a DCVA.
Device #2
Reduced Pressure Backflow Assembly (RPBA): Fertilizer and other agricultural chemicals may be introduced downstream of (after) the RPBA.
Device Requirements:
- Only one backflow prevention assembly device is required to serve the whole system.
- Control valves can be located downstream of (after) the assembly device.
- Must be tested by Steve Coke, City of Olympia, when installed, then annually by a
- state-certified backflow assembly tester, and when moved or repaired.
