How Do I Set Up A Neighborhood Wood-chipping Event?
We start taking reservations the first of the year. Sessions typically fill up quickly. Sessions for 2009 are all full. Please check back the first of the year to get sign-up information for 2010.
How the Neighborhood Wood-chipping Program Works:
The City will arrange for a chipper and a two-person crew to come to your neighborhood for 2 hours of free wood-chipping. The resultant chips are left on site for residents to use for landscaping, mulching, and composting.
- Chipping events are scheduled for groups of four or more households that have City of Olympia garbage service.
- You must have an accessible, centralized location for the pile of wood debris.
- Make sure there is room for the resulting chips.
Guidelines & Tips for Neighbohood Wood-chipping Events
-
Three 2-hour events are scheduled for each Saturday. Please note if you prefer the 8:30 a.m. shift or a later time. We work to accommodate your request, but scheduled times are limited.
- The first event begins at 8:30 a.m. So be sure to have everything ready the day before.
- Following completion of each event, the contractor will move to the next event.
- The contractor does not operate chain saws or cutting tools.
- The pile should be well-prepared to make the best use of your time slot.
- A neighborhood representative must be available and at the site on your chipping day.
What We Can and Cannot Chip at a Neighbohood Wood-chipping Event:

Does the City provide Chips?
No. The best way to get wood chips is to call a tree service company. You can look them up in the Yellow Pages or online. Tree service companies usually have to pay to dispose of the chips, so often they are happy to give them to residents instead. Generally, you will have to work around their schedule and accept the chips when they have them. It will also mean you need to take quite a large amount.
