Downtown Noise Ordinance
Community Meeting
Date: Wednesday, August 6, 2008
Time: 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (doors open at 1:30 p.m.)
Location: The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, 512 Washington Street SE, Olympia
The Olympia City Council is considering setting a maximum level for noise in the downtown area. While noise standards apply in Olympia's residential areas, commercial zones are except. Currently downtown Olympia is designated as a "commercial zone." However, there are over a thousand permanent residential units in downtown, plus hotel and motel overnight lodging. The purpose of the proposed downtown noise ordinance is to recognize downtown Olympia's status as both a commercial and residential area.
The August 6 community meeting is being facilitated by the Olympia City Council General Government Committee. Members of the committee are Jeff Kingsbury, Craig Ottavelli, and Rhenda Strub. Also present at the meeting will be David George, noise abatement coordiator for the City of Seattle, and Ruth Snyder, Olympia's downtown code enforcement officer.
The meeting will begin with about 20 minutes of informational presentation about the ordinance and the reasons the Council is considering a maximum noise standard. The remainder of the time will be devoted to questions and answers.
