Did you know that the last time the Olympia Fire Department added a fire station was 1969? In 1970, OFD responded to approximately 470 calls from three stations. In 2007 we responded to 8,953 calls from three stations. For a graphic of our fire and medical responses, click here.

This is an artist rendition of the proposed
station 4 in the Lilly Road area.

Currently, the Olympia Fire Department has three fire stations:
Headquarters Station located at 100 Eastside Street NE Station 02 at 330 Kenyon Street NW. Station 03 at 2525 22nd Avenue SE.

The percentage of population growth since 1970 to 2007 is 91%. The percentage of call load increase for the Olympia Fire Department during that same time period is 1800%. The number of calls OFD reponded to in the year 1970, we now handle in approximately 19 days.

This graph shows the population growth of Olympia from 1970 to 2007

This graph represents the number of 911 calls that we responded to from 1960 to 2007.

There are additional reasons for our increased response time beyond our population growth:
  • We have increased the size of our City. We now have a larger area to cover with 35+ years of annexations. The City annexation maps illustrate this.
  • There have been changes in street design and features.
  • There has been an increase in traffic, causing longer response times.
  • There is an increased demand for 911 services in the neighborhoods of Olympia.

How will adding Station 4 impact you?

Station 4 with a 24/7 staffed Engine Company will:

  • Lower response times in NE neighborhoods by an estimated average of 5 minutes.
  • Increase Engine 3's time in their primary response area by an estimated 50%
  • Decrease the number of times when Stations 1 & 2 are called out of their response areas.
  • Lower response times in Northeast neighborhoods by 48%.
  • Lower response times to the balance of the City by 15%.

What would Station 4 Cost?

  • A fire station facility in the vicinity of Lilly and Stoll Road if constructed in 2009 would cost $8,940,487.
  • Impact fees have already been collected and have been used to purchase the Fire Station property.
