DAILY ACTIVITY SUMMARY
M onday through Friday, the Records staff compiles a brief Daily Activity Summary of case reports written by OPD officers, and we make the most current Summaries available for you to view on-line.
Normally, the Summary is available by Noon on the date it is prepared. However, on occasions when we need to process a larger volume of reports, it may not be available until later in the day. Case reports written over the weekend are reported in the Monday Summary. The Summary does not include information on traffic tickets; information on reports written by other police agencies; or information on routine police activities that require no official documentation.
In reading the Summary, please remember that being arrested does not mean that a person is guilty of the charge(s) listed. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Also, be aware that the charges listed in the Summary are initial offenses as charged by the officer at the time of arrest. The Prosecutor ultimately decides if charges will be filed in court, and, if so, what they will be. So, charges actually brought to court by the Prosecutor may differ somewhat from the initial charges you see on the Summary.
Further information about a case can be requested by asking for a copy of the police report.
Daily Activity Summaries are currently available for the following dates:
May 9, 2008
May 12, 2008
May 13, 2008
May 14, 2008
May 15, 2008

CURRENT OPD AND PUBLIC SAFETY NEWS
Beware of Security Alarm Scams. If you're thinking about buying an alarm system, here are some things you should be aware of . . .
- Deals that seem too good to be true. Most deals that seem too good to be true are just that . . . too good to be true. There are some alarm businesses that will offer you a free alarm system in exchange for displaying the company's sign in your lawn. They sign you to a long-term contract and then won't let you out of it after your "free" system starts costing you money in false alarm fees and repairs because your system was installed with substandard equipment and poor workmanship.
- Misleading corporate representation. Beware of alarm sales people who either claim to work for or wear clothing logos from manufacturers like GE and Honeywell. The manufacturers of alarm equipment don't sell directly to retail customers and they don't allow their logos to be used by companies that do engage in the selling of retail alarm systems.
- Unlicensed alarm companies. In Olympia, all alarm companies must have a City security alarm business license. A State license alone is not sufficient. Among the things a City license does for you is it requires any company wanting to sell you an alarm system to fully inform you of the rules and regulations contained in Section 16.46 of the Olympia Municipal Code before you actually purchase any alarm equipment or service. If a sales person can't produce a City alarm business license when asked, or doesn't provide the required consumer advisements in a timely way, you should not purchase anything from that sales person and should contact the OPD Alarm Administrator at 753-8090.
- Fly-by night operations. Bona fide, professional alarm businesses will assess your home's vulnerabilities; discuss alarm system details; disclose alarm notification procedures; and tell you about the call center that will handle your monitoring service. If a company representative does not do those things, or tells you that his company has trucks "standing by to install your alarm today," be suspect that you may not be dealing with a reputable company.
Olympia is fortunate to be served by a number of first-rate security alarm companies who will tell you up front about their services; who will talk to you frankly about the responsibilities of alarm ownership; who will provide you with local references; and who will encourage you to take the time to verify the quality of their work before you agree to any purchase.
Take time to check out companies you're considering hiring to do your alarm work. As an alarm owner, you'll be held responsible for false alarm fees and for keeping your system in good working order. A "free" installation poorly done could easily cost you more in fees and repairs than you would have spent had you bought a quality system in the first place.

Help Clean Up Graffiti. The best defense against graffiti is to take away the offender's satisfaction of public display. To do that, prompt removal is required, but it's a community effort. If we all work together to remove graffiti, our community will look better and we will discourage the problem in the future. We've put together some suggestions on what we can be doing together to combat graffiti and other vandalism. To see what you can do, click here.
Vacation Checks Now Available. The Olympia Police Department Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) are pleased to offer a vacation check program to the residents of Olympia. This program allows residents to request that VIPS conduct low-level security security checks of their homes while they are away. We believe our presence and observation of the residence may deter criminal activity and lead to better over-all safety in our community.
Residents wishing to use this service must appear in person at the Olympia Police Department front office during regular business hours (Mon-Fri/8 AM -
5 PM) and complete an application.
