Pedestrian Countdown Signals
Have you seen new pedestrian signals with countdown timers around town?
The City of Olympia is installing new countdown pedestrian signals. A countdown timer is displayed at the same time as the flashing "Don't Walk" or upraised hand to inform the pedestrian of the amount of time remaining for them to cross the street. The City is installing these new signals to improve safety and enhance the pedestrian's walking experience.
How Pedestrian Signals Work:
- If the signal shows a steady "Walk" or person walking, it is okay to cross, but watch for turning cars. A signal will display the "Walk" mode for a predetermined amount of time. The flashing "Don't Walk" or upraised hand appears telling pedestrians they should not step off the sidewalk and begin crossing.
- If you are already crossing when the signal starts to flash, finish crossing. Once the signal starts flashing, a pedestrian that has already begun to cross will have adequate time to complete the crossing. Often, a person feels rushed when the flashing "Don't Walk" appears.
- When the flashing "Don't Walk" appears the countdown numbers are displayed to help pedestrians understand how many seconds they have to finish crossing. If the signal already shows a steady "Don't Walk" or a steady hand, don't start crossing. Pedestrians should not be in the crosswalk. Wait for the next "Walk" signal.
LED Conversion: The new signals are equipped with LED (light emitting diode) lights, instead of incandescent bulbs. By February 2009, all signals throughout the City will be using LED bulbs. LED use at signals ultimately reduce power consumption by 80 to 90%.
