Walking - Sidewalk Care

Prevent Sidewalks from Cracking

You can help prevent sidewalks from cracking and keep them clear of obstructions. Damaged sidewalks can be dangerous and expensive to repair.

  • Don't park your car on sidewalks. Cars parked on the sidewalk block the way for pedestrians and can crack and damage sidewalks. A vehicle owner can receive a $75.00 parking ticket for obstructing the sidewalk.
  • Call the City's Urban Forester before planting in the planter strip (the area between the sidewalk and the street). Some tree roots will lift and crack sidewalks. The City's Neighborwoods Program will help you choose the right tree and the right location. For more information, call the City's Urban Forester at (360) 753-8435, TTY (360) 753-8270.

Keep Sidewalks Clear of Obstructions

Obstructions can be difficult to navigate. While some people can walk around an obstruction, it might be difficult or impossible for someone in a wheelchair or pushing a stroller to pass an obstruction.  Here's what you can do.

  • Trim overgrown bushes and trees. Trim back vegetations to seven feet above the entire width of the sidewalk.
  • Keep sidewalks clear of snow. Sometimes walking is the best way to travel when the roads are covered in snow. Next time it snows, please shovel the sidewalk in front of your home or business.
  • Avoid placing garbage or recycling carts on the sidewalk. Please do not obstruct the sidewalk with your cart, unless there is no other space next to the road.
