Construction News - Union Avenue Overlay

Description:                                                            

The project will start with reconstruction of pedestrian access ramps, sidewalk improvements, streetlight and pedestrian signal hardware relocations, and other related work. Once that work is complete the project will move to grinding the existing pavement then repaving and striping Union Avenue from Capitol Way through the Plum Street intersection.                                      

Construction to Start Wednesday, July 29:

The contract was awarded to KBH Construction of Olympia, WA.  The contractor plans to start work Wednesday, July 29, 2009 and construction is expected to be completed by mid-October 2009 based on the following schedule:

  • 07/29 – 09/11 - Pedestrian access ramps, sidewalk improvements & related work
  • 09/07 – 09/23 - Roadway preparation work and pavement grinding
  • 09/22 – 09/27 - Paving & striping
  • 09/30 – 10/09 - Project completion work

Traffic Impacts:

Construction hours will be between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding City-recognized holidays.The road will remain open during the day. However traffic delays will occur during roadway grinding and paving operations. Grinding and paving in the Union Avenue and Plum Street intersection will be completed at night to minimize traffic delays. This work will occur between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Funding:

The City of Olympia was awarded one of the first federal economic stimulus grants to complete the Union Avenue Overlay project.  This grant for $1.2 million was awarded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This is a unique opportunity for the City to construct a critical transportation project almost entirely with federal funds.
