Union Avenue Construction Overview:

The project is nearing completion of the pedestrian access ramps and sidewalk improvements, and the contractor accelerated their construction schedule in order to complete the roadway work before the onset of wet weather.

Paving Work:

The final phase of paving on Union Avenue is scheduled for Wednesday September 30, 2009.  This final phase will complete the asphalt overlay on Union Avenue from Cherry Street to Capitol Way.

Traffic Impacts On Union Avenue:

  • The road will remain open during construction.
  • Bus Routes:  Flaggers will asssist pedestrians in accessing bus service along Union Avenue.
  • Local access to driveways will be allowed on the side streets but access to and from Union Avenue during paving and striping operations will be restricted.  At least one lane of traffic will be open for traffic moving east and west along Union Ave.
  • Traffic control will be set up and flaggers will assist drivers around the construction zone as needed.  Pedestrian traffic will be assisted by flaggers as needed.
  • Brief and intermittent delays may be encountered, especially during pavement grinding and paving operations.
  • Construction noise, dust and truck traffic can be expected.
  • Additional lanes may be closed during paving operations to allow paving equipment and workers to maneuver safely in the work area.  The following intersections will be closed for extended periods to northbound and southbound traffic while paving and striping:
    • Washington Street,
    • Adams Street,
    • Jefferson Street, and
    • Cherry Street intersections

Please drive with caution through the project area and obey the directions of the flaggers.
