Construction News - Olympia Library Remodel

Description: The Olympia Timberland Regional Library facility received some exciting upgrades this fall. Improvements included:

  • New carpet throughout the library
  • New circulation desk
  • New information desk
  • New furniture in the atrium
  • New paint
  • Public computer workstations and chairs cleaned and repaired
  • New service - holds area for self-pickup of materials
  • Remodeled workspace behind the circulation desk will speed the flow of tasks and library materials

Funding: Funding for the project came from a variety of sources:

  • City of Olympia Building Maintenance Fund: Provided carpet replacement, approximately $109,053.
  • Interest from two Olympia Library bequests: Painting, new information and circulation desks, staff work area remodel, storage containers and temporary labor, total costs to be determined. 
  • Timberland Regional Library: Professional space planning services, approximately $15,000.
  • Private Donation: New furniture in the atrium, approximately $12,000.
  • The Friends of the Olympia Timberland Library: Boxes to store the books and other materials, approximately $4,000.

Background: Olympia's library building turned 30 years old in December 2008. Except for the computer stations, the library furniture including shelves, service desks and workstations, are the same age. Use of the facility increases continually. Library statistics show that in February 2008, an average of 1,400 people visited the library per day. On a record-breaking day in July 2008, 2,486 people visited the library. This project brought much needed improvements to this vital community resource.
