Construction News - Signalhead Light Conversion
Description: Project work consists of removing the existing traffic signalheads, at intersections throughout downtown, and replacing them with LED lights. Also, included in the project is removing the pedestrian walk/don't walk signal units and replacing them with LED countdown signal displays.
The picture at right shows the new LED countdown signal.
Why replace the lights?
- Retrofitting existing vehicle and pedestrian signals with LED bulbs will reduce power consumption up to 90%, compared to the exisiting incandescent bulbs.
- Maintenance costs for replacing failed bulbs are greatly reduced as well because LEDs generally last years longer than incandescent bulbs.
- As a result, less air pollution and green house gasses will be produced due to greater energy efficiency and life span on the LEDs.
Location: Intersections throughout downtown are receiving vehicle and pedestrian signal light replacements.
Schedule: Construction is scheduled to begin the first week of January and continue through February 2009.
Traffic Impacts: Minimal traffic impacts are expected. For short periods of time, equipment may block one lane of traffic.
